Interview Tips

“Job seekers who agonize over their resumes and cover letters might consider working on their interview skills instead.” KNIGHT RIDER/TRIBUNE

More interview preparation tips:

  1. Arrive early for the interview
  2. Research the company and position you are applying for to ensure informed answers
  3. Be knowledgeable, but not arrogant.
  4. Have great eye contact, a strong handshake
  5. Don’t cross your arms (appears defensive)
  6. Better to be overdressed than underdressed
  7. Role play with a friend using questions such as “Tell me a little about yourself”
  8. If you don’t know an answer to a question, say, “I really don’t know, but I could research that…”
  9. As the interview starts, find out what skills the company is looking for. For instance, as you sit down, say, “I’m really interested in this job. I’d like to match my skills with what your needs are. Can you please tell me what the keys are to this position?” Say it in a nice way. There’s no crime in asking. Otherwise you’re shooting blanks.
  10. One of the biggest mistakes in applying for a position is applying for a job without a referral from a company employee.

Imagine yourself at a company interview, sitting across from the hiring manager and the first question asked is “Tell me a little about yourself.” Does a succinct, confident answer easily come to you? Let’s say the next few questions are “Give me an example of someone who wasn’t an ideal boss” or “What prompted each of your departures from previous organizations?” or “Tell me about a time when you worked with a difficult person.” Perhaps you are confident your answers are winners. If not, interview prep career coaching could help you ace an interview.
